The Australian's Adam Creighton says Scott Morrison's optimism in setting a 3.75 per cent growth target over the next five yearsis a "pie in the sky idea".

"The bulk of our economic growth for years has been population growth," Mr Creighton said.

"The idea we'll grow even faster than we have done is completely farcical."

Mr Creighton applauded the Prime Minister's push for reform but argued it was "certainly not" going to be achievable to hit the 3.75 per cent target.

"Once economies take a hit, they take a permanent hit," he said.
