NSW Police officers have been forced to protect a statue of Captain James Cook in Sydney's Hyde Park, as colonial monuments are toppled and vandalised across the country and world.

Officers were pictured circling the statue during last night's unauthorised Black Lives Matter protest.

The statue remained under guard until demonstrators were dispersed.
