Former speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop says she wants to find a mechanism “whereby the prime minister can force” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews out of the controversial debt diplomacy Belt and Roads agreement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on radio on Thursday states and territories “should not be doing things that act inconsistently with the federal policy” given the commonwealth government has declared it will not sign up to the initiative.

The prime minister said Premier Andrews should back out of the deal because it is “inconsistent with the government policy”.

Ms Bishop told Sky News host Paul Murray China wish to be the “dominant power in the world” and Australia needs to “stand up for what we want so we don’t go down on the bended knee and we don’t bow”.
