Speaking of the Robodebt refund, Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says “if errors have been made,” the government has a responsibility to “rectify them”.

On the first of July, the federal government will experience a $721 million dollar hit to the budget as it refunds welfare payments which were suspended under the contentious Robodebt scheme.

Mr Canavan said in 2019 the government suspended certain welfare repayments, but after a review process which was conducted while the suspensions were in place “big problems” were discovered.

Debt which had been raised by 470,000 Australians, either wholly or partially, using income averaging data from the tax office will be refunded.

Sky News host Chris Kenny said the refund “ordinarily would be a massive hit, but these days it seem like small fry” when compared to the stimulus packages released by the Morrison government in response to COVID-19.
