Victorians voters ‘had no say’ in Belt and Road Initiative

Daniel Andrews didn’t give voters a say when he decided to sign Victoria up to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, according to state opposition leader Michael O'Brien.

Victoria has confirmed it will push ahead with its plan to sign up to China’s US$1.4 trillion infrastructure program.

The Belt and Road Initiative is designed to link China with Asia, Europe and Africa via a massive infrastructure investment that will see the widespread construction of railways, motorways and ports.

China claims the deal will be mutually beneficial, but Beijing maintains the right to seize the asset it has built if the country cannot pay for it.

This happened in Sri Lanka, where the communist party repossessed a port after the government was unable to repay the loans it used to build it.

Mr O’Brien told Sky News the Andrews government is not telling the public what it agreed to with China.

“The Andrews government won’t tell the public how much they have borrowed from China or what we are borrowing for.”

“We do know that Chinese government owned companies are building the Melbourne metro tunnel, they are removing Victoria’s level crossings, they are building our trains.

“The benefits we have seen so far have been pretty much flowing one way, and it’s not our way.”
