Nanaimo RCMP are investigating an unprovoked assault on a 74-year-old man on a trail near Glen Oaks Drive and Timbercrest Way.

The victim told police he was walking his dog about 7 a.m. Wednesday when he came across a man who was also walking his dog.

As they passed, the victim told the other man that his dog should be on a leash. In response, the other man yelled at him and punched him in the face, cutting his lip.

The two men grappled for a while before the suspect left while swearing and threatening the victim.

During the fight, the suspect told the victim that he was 72. He is described as white, medium height and with medium build, had a white mustache and was wearing green boots.

He was walking a small, shaggy black dog.
