College student admits hanging noose in dorm elevator, avoids prison

A University of Illinois student who shocked his campus last year after hanging a noose in a dorm elevator has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor charge that comes with no jail time. Andrew Smith, 20, originally faced a felony hate-crime charge, but prosecutors said he had “no history of racial prejudice" and offered him a plea deal.
