Government response lacking ‘substance’ over ‘devastating’ jobs figures

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has criticised the government’s handling of the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic as lacking in “substance” and taking the focus off of “devastating” employment issues. April’s unemployment figures have revealed the unemployment rate has risen to 6.2 per cent and underemployment to 13.7 per cent. He said Treasurer Josh Frydenberg’s response on Tuesday to the economic situation was “a speech from Seinfeld, a speech about nothing”. “There will be a cumulative effect, not the least of which because when we look at the Jobkeeper program, the government is still leaving people behind particularly the most vulnerable, our causal employees,” he said. “Before this government, it is all about day to day political management and there’s nowhere where that’s more evident in the last few days than their rediscovery of the bushfire crisis.” Image: News Corp Australia/ Toby Zerna
