Macron Visits Charles de Gaulle Statue in Scaled Down VE Day Celebration
over 5 years in news
French President Emmanuel Macron paid a visit to the statue of General Charles de Gaulle – who led the French Resistance against Nazi Germany during World War II – as a remembrance of VE Day on May 8. The celebrations in France were smaller than originally planned for the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, due to COVID-19 social-distancing concerns. Elsewhere in Paris, deputies in the National Assembly sang La Marseillaise following a wreath-laying to commemorate their predecessors and staff members at the assembly who were killed during the Second World War.
