No one was injured in a Wednesday morning fire that is believed to be the result of an accident during a construction project.

“There was construction taking place near some plumbing,” said Deputy Fire Chief Dan Atkinson.

The Victoria Fire Department received its first 911 call about a fire at a Gorge Road East apartment building about 9:40 a.m. Three engines and two ladder trucks responded.

Atkinson said firefighters saw smoke coming from the the fourth floor of the complex when they arrived. “Crews went inside, did an initial interior attack and were able to gain control of the fire pretty quickly,” he said.

He said the fire was in a “tricky area” as the building is close to neighbouring ones.

Despite the quick knockdown of the fire, Atkinson said crews remained for some time to take care of hot spots and other issues.

The scene was cleared about 11 a.m.
