The United Kingdom is approaching the highest national COVID -19 death toll in Europe as 288 new fatalities take the total number of UK deaths to almost 29,000.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the number of fatalities was expected to rise after a lull in testing over the weekend.

Mr Hancock also encouraged UK residents to download a test, track and trace app to help the government control the spread of the virus.

The government is set to hold meetings with health experts this week to discuss a way to ease restrictions to allow people to return to work.
