That first glide and unique sense of peace — I'm dreaming of getting back in the swimming pool

about 4 years in Standard

I have started dreaming about swimming. Of that first glide. Body stretched full-length, tiles flicking past below. Legs beginning to kick. The pull of an arm through water, and the end of one breath and turn for another. Friends and I talk about how long it is since we last put on our costumes and adjusted our goggles. On Twitter, I watch someone do a full-stroke workout hanging off the end of her kitchen island. I frown over diagrams of land-based exercises for swimmers, and wonder whether the person who suggests substituting a bath for a dip can really be serious.
