The Northern Territory's Premier Michael Gunner has indicted he will begin to ease restrictions ahead of the May Day long weekend as the territory has only five remaining active cases of the coronavirus out of the 28 recorded.

Some locally controlled parks will be opened from midday on Friday with locals allowed to go camping, while national parks controlled by the federal government will remain closed.

NT residents are also pushing for restaurants to begin reopening.
