Tech expert Trevor Long says at every step the new COVIDSafe app “gives you clarity around what you’re doing” as more than 50 per cent of Coalition, Labor, and Green voters have said they will download the app according to the latest Newspoll.

Using Bluetooth, the app traces prolonged contact of other users within range for 21 days allowing health authorities to quickly track down people who have been in contact with someone who tests positive for coronavirus.

The government argues this process will streamline the process of finding contacts who have been exposed to the coronavirus, reducing the time the disease has to spread throughout the community.

Mr Long told Sky News host Paul Murray the most important thing to know about the government’s new app is “all the information about who you’ve been near is stored on your phone”.

“Only if you are tested positive for coronavirus are you asked if you would like to upload that information to a central government server which can only be accessed by a health department official”.

“Not a single thing is recorded in terms of information,” Mr Long said.

The Newspoll released on Sunday asked respondents whether they would download the application with 53 per cent replying “yes or definitely yes,” with 39% saying “no or definitely no”.
