Innovative arts administrator who served as the head of English National Opera and the Bavarian State Opera
Serving for a little more than 20 years as head of two of Europe’s leading opera houses, Sir Peter Jonas, who has died aged 73 from cancer, made an indelible impression on operatic activity the world over.
From 1985 to 1993 he was general director of English National Opera, a member of the so-called Powerhouse triumvirate along with the conductor Mark Elder and director of productions David Pountney.
