ANZAC Day will still provide an opportunity for a ‘grateful nation to say thank you’

Although public ANZAC Day services will not go ahead in 2020, Veterans Affairs Minister Darren Chester says it will still be a "chance for a grateful nation to simply say thank you for your service," but in a more private fashion.

Across the nation on Friday morning, Australians have been urged to stay at home but partake in the Light Up the Dawn campaign where people will gather outsider their homes and conduct a "silent vigil".

In Canberra though where thousands would usually gather outside the National War Memorial, a private service will occur with the prime minister, the governor-general, and the opposition leader, "along with some defence service personnel," the minister said.

Mr Chester told Sky News Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert the "freedoms we enjoy today have been hard fought (for) by previous generations," but although there will be private vigils it is still "disappointing (and) it's frustrating" that traditional services will not go ahead.
