Langford brush fire on steep hill a challenging one for firefighters

A brush fire accidentally ignited by workers Tuesday afternoon posed a challenge to firefighters as it spread quickly up a steep hill on Woodruff Road in Langford.

They fought the fire from about 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., then were back at the site Wednesday morning dealing with hot spots despite overnight rain.

“It’s an area of property that’s been logged and has been cleared and managed for development,” said Langford Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Lance Caven.

Access is a little challenging and water had to be shuttled in with fire trucks, he said.

“There’s no water supply up there so we were just shuttling it in with the fire trucks.”

The fire ended up covering about 1.5 hectares.

Help was provided by the Colwood and Metchosin fire departments and the B.C. Forest Service, with the View Royal department on standby.
