Pennsylvanians Amass Outside Capitol to Protest Lockdown Measures

A large crowd rallied at Pennsylvania’s state capitol building in Harrisburg on Monday, April 20, to protest for an end to the state’s lockdown measures aimed at mitigating the spread of the new coronavirus. A stay-at-home order for Pennsylvania was put into effect until at least April 30, prohibiting people from hosting or attending gatherings of ten or more people. On April 16, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf vetoed legislation to reopen some Pennsylvania businesses, sparking protests from those seeking to return the economy to normal. This video shows people gathered outside the State Capitol on Monday, waving American flags and holding signs. “Governor Wolf can keep his socialist ideas. We are a free people, and a free country, and a free state,” a man says to the crowd of anti-lockdown protesters. Wolf announced an easing of certain restrictions on Monday, including construction projects, curbside pickups at liquor stores, and online vehicle sales. Wolf said the new coronavirus is “still very much a threat,” and reiterated that a statewide stay-at-home order was still in place. The protest at the State Capitol was organized by several groups, including ReOpen PA, End The Lockdown PA, and Pennsylvanians Against Excessive Quarantine, local media reported. As of Monday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Department of Health had reported at least 33,232 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and at least 1,204 deaths statewide. Credit: Joy Elizabeth via Storyful
