Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro spoke to a crowd of hundreds gathered outside the Ministry of Defense headquarters in Brasilia on April 19 after protesters demanded military intervention against COVID-19 social distancing measures, reports said. The largely pro-Bolsonaro crowd called for military intervention and the closure of Brazil’s Congress and the Federal Supreme Court, as well as the ousting of Rodrigo Maia, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, reports said. The protesters, few of whom were seen wearing masks or keeping the recommended six feet apart, held signs such as “military intervention with Bolsonaro already” and “Maia out.” Bolsonaro has been vocal against social distancing measures and fired Brazil’s health minister, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, on Thursday, April 16, reports said.
