Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly says the World Health Organisation "has had a checkered history in some issues in the past," but is a "is a crucial part of the United Nations and the global response to his pandemic".

Professor Kelly said the WHO "definitely need the funding" but "need to be accountable for those funds, of course".

"I'm a supporter of the World Health Organisation and their continued work in this and many other things," the professor said.

It comes as President Trump recently suspended funding to the WHO after he accused the “China-centric” body of “severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus”.

While on Friday, Liberal Senator Eric Abetz broke party ranks and said he would "support the suspension of funding support" for the organisation.
