$50 million regional media bailout is ‘too little, too late’ Fitzgibbon

Shadow Agriculture Spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon says the regional media bailout announced earlier in the week is “too little, too late”.

The $50 million government package to support regional media sought to save over 100 rural newspapers which have been forced to close in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Fitzgibbon said “these media outlets were in trouble well before the coronavirus”.

“We’ve been urging some change in the regulatory regime for at least five or six years,” he told Sky news host Chris Kenny.

“The coronavirus has been like the final nail in the coffin”.

If we don’t make some serious changes “we are going to lose more of these media organisations,” he said.

Mr Fitzgibbon said the local news was “absolutely critical” for rural communities.

These regional media stations provide “news which is really important for local people such as what is happening in the community and what is happening in the local Council… and also employ a lot of people in regional towns”.
