Australia ‘cannot get complacent’ over coronavirus

It would be a "tragedy" if state and federal government lifted Australia's stringent social distancing measures before it was safe to do so, according to Labor frontbencher Richard Marles. Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said the coronavirus curve is being flattened in Australia but warns community complacency could pose the biggest risk to that progress. In order to stop the novel coronavirus COVID-19, state and federal government implemented tough social distancing and shut down many services including bars, clubs, churches and beauty saloons. At present, there are 6,010 cases in Australia resulting in 50 deaths. Mr Marles told Sky News said while it's understandable some want a return to normality, there's a "long way to go" before restrictions can be lifted. "I think the truth of the matter is we have a fair way to go here," he said. "We can't be complacent about this, it is going to take some time before we can with confidence take the foot of the brake." "It would be a tragedy given what has been achieved so far to make that judgement too early." Image: News Corp Australia
