COVID 19 shows how vulnerable ‘we are to strategic coercion’ from foreign powers

about 4 years in news

Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has been publicly critical of growing Russian and Chinese influence throughout the globe and says Australia doesn't want to "pull the drawbridge up, but we must do things from a position of strength".

Mr Hastie says there are many areas within Australia's economy and government which are viewed as "benign" but foreign actors like Russia and China see them as "potential opportunities to advance their own interests, often at the expense of ours".

"We need to be constantly vigilant against threats to our sovereignty".

Chinese influence runs through its growing power in the technology space such as Huawei, but also via its prolific foreign investment.

Mr Hastie told Sky News hosts Alan Jones and Peta Credlin, the coronavirus has shown just "how vulnerable we are to strategic coercion or supply chain warfare".
