The commercial property sector must ‘get back to work to survive’

Property Economist Dr Andrew Wilson says the “can of worms” the government is dealing with when it comes to the commercial property sector, “just keeps getting bigger”.

On Friday, the Prime Minister announced the National Cabinet are working on a code of practice for commercial tenants and landlords and will consider further protections for the residential sector as the coronavirus continues to impact the industry.

Mr Wilson said, “our financial structures rely on the commercial property sector and superannuation funds are big investors” in this market.

“For every tenant who gets relief, there’s also a landlord who needs relief as well,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

The lock down has created major issues for landlords and tenants which can only be solved by “getting back to work as quickly as possible,” he said.

Ms Credlin said “the grace the prime minister was talking about to be given to tenants who have lost their jobs and can’t pay the rent, isn’t license for everyone to stop paying their commitments if they can meet them”.
