Strict social distancing regulations ‘run the risk of creating resentment’

Sky News host Chris Kenny says many of the everyday activities Australians engage in, such as going for a swim at the beach or sitting in a park, shouldn’t be against the law and “ought to be allowed within reason”.

Strict social distancing regulations have been implemented across Australia in a bid to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Fines and potential jail-time are now possible outcomes for those who break the rules.

Mr Kenny said the fact many Australians largely don’t engage in many of the activities we were doing just a month ago “demonstrates how quickly we have all adapted (and) how dramatically our world has changed”.

“To me the key rules with social or physical distancing should be straight forward and general,” he said.

“Stay home as much as you can, but when you go out stick to couples or family groups and keep your distance from others, that's it”.

“Prescriptive rules and policing about sitting as opposed to walking in parks, or walking on beaches as opposed to golf courses, all of this is over the top”.

“It is creating confusion and it runs the risk of generating resentment very quickly”.
