The Coalition has completely ‘remodelled’ the childcare sector

Education Minister Dan Tehan says the government's $1.3 billion free child care package is "underpinning the viability of the childcare sector".

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the government will spend $1.6 billion supporting 13,000 childcare facilities and parents to take away the financial burden of having children.

"What we want to do is to make sure we've got child care available for those who are working … [to] make sure that we've got child care available for vulnerable children".

Mr Tehan explained the eligibility requirements for centres to receive the payments, and said "if you are a centre, you have to be open to receive these payments".

"We've basically remodelled - in the space of a week - the way that we are going to fund the childcare sector," he said.

Mr Tehan told Sky News host Paul Murray it is "safe to send your children to childcare, and it is safe to send them to schools".

"For those workers who are working and need to have their child cared for, you're out there doing your duty to help this nation to combat this pandemic to help us get through the other side".

"So we want to be providing free support for you while you're away".
