Australian coronavirus response ‘on par with Korea’

ANU Infectious Diseases Physician Professor Peter Collignon says the Australian government “should be congratulated” on their rapid and effective response to the coronavirus.

Mr Collignon said “not only have we flattened the curve, but daily cases of the new disease are going down”.

“We have been successful so far, just like Korea has,” he told Sky News host Chris Smith.

Mr Collignon said while “the role masks play is controversial,” what has made a difference is closing our borders, clubs, bars”.

Social distancing, quarantining return travellers and closing venues where large groups congregate inside has also played a crucial role in reducing the spread of the virus, he said.

According to Mr Collignon “we are now in a situation where it looks like we have turned the curve on the first wave”.

“We should congratulate ourselves that we have one of the lowest mortality rates in the world, one of the highest testing rates and at this stage it looks like the virus is coming under control”.
