Food shortages a ‘real problem’ for charities like Foodbank

about 4 years in heraldsun

Foodbank NSW and ACT CEO John Robertson says while demand for food relief has increased across Australia, donations and volunteers have dropped dramatically.

Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief charity which provides over 70 per cent of the food used in organisations providing aid across the nation.

Mr Robertson said “demand had increased massively by almost 50 percent” and yet “25 percent of the food coming into our warehouses had dropped because demand is so great in the supermarkets”.

“The supermarkets are vacuuming up all excess food to make sure they can keep shelves stocked,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray.

Mr Robertson said “corporate volunteering has fallen off a cliff”.

“We would normally have 250 to 300 corporate volunteers a week in our warehouse and last week we were down to four and this week we had none and that means we have had to employ people”

According to Mr Robertson, “keeping up with demand” has become a real “test” and having to employ people long term would be “unsustainable” for the charity.
