Australian scientists have discovered a way to capture the coronavirus in 3D form, giving researchers a vital tool in the hunt for a vaccine or a cure for the novel pathogen.
Authorities across the world are desperately seeking a vaccine or possible cure for the novel virus COVID-19, which has so far killed 37,846 people and ground the global economy to a halt.
Australian Synchrotron Professor Andrew Peele told Sky News his organisation has used its ultra power xray beams to examine "the individual proteins" in the disease.
"If you understand the structure of a protein, then you can understand how to interact with it," he said.
If you are building a vaccine or you are building a drug then having that knowledge gives scientist a great leg up in the hunt for a vaccine."
He said Australian Synchrotron is working with researchers across the world to "solve this problem".
"Australia has some of, if not the leading researchers in immunology and related fields and these are the people you want working around the clock in our own research institutions."
