New York has confirmed more than 7,000 new cases of the coronavirus in the past day, taking the city’s total number of cases to 59,513 and accounting for nearly half of the United State’s number of infections. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his support for President Donald Trump’s limit on non-essential travel across a number of states, including New York, as the 237 new deaths were recorded, raising the death toll to 965. Mr Cuomo also appealed to the federal government for 30,000 more ventilators as the US becomes the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic and is expected to reach its apex in a number of weeks.
