Treasury to advise PM on new wage subsidy for out of work Australians

about 4 years in news

Sky News understands the Australian treasury will advise the government on a taxpayer-funded wage subsidy model for workers displaced during the COVID-19 crisis.

Political Editor Andrew Clennell said while Prime Minister Scott Morrison ruled out following the UK's 80 per cent wage subsidy model, it considered another flat rate for those who've lost their income.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said creating an entirely new financial support system would add to delays to Australians receiving financial assistance.

The government has tried to assist Australians through existing channels within the tax system but wage subsidies have not been ruled off the table.
