New York is the United State’s most affected city with more than 30,000 cases of COVID-19 recorded, making up more than half of the nation’s number of confirmed infections.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has asked hospitals to increase their current capacity of 53,000 beds by at least 50 per cent as health authorities predict 140,000 virus patients will require treatment.
Mr Cuomo also urged all New York residents to adhere to social distancing restrictions as they continue to ramp up, with public parks now under consideration for closure.
