Social Services MP Anne Ruston said Centrelink staff have had “one hell of a day” due to the increased demand placed upon the welfare system after the government decided to close non-essential businesses in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Ms Ruston said the “demand we have seen on services today has never been seen before”.

“We’re scaling up as quickly as we can and making sure we’re putting things in place to make sure every single person who needs our help will get it,” she told Sky News host Paul Murray.

The crisis is “unrolling so quickly” but “we’re doing our best to try and respond and stay ahead of the” rapidly changing needs of the socio-political landscape, she said.
