The reason ARL chairman Peter V’landys "pushed so hard" for the NRL to keep playing is because he knows some clubs are in "a perilous position", according to Sky News host Tim Gilbert.

The NRL 2020 season has been suspended indefinitely with immediate effect in order to protect its players from the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Gilbert said while some clubs are more "insulated" from financial calamity, others are "already in trouble."

"We are going to see more jobs losses (in the NRL) today," Mr Gilbert said.

"Right now in 2020, NRL is on the edge".

The NRL's decision to suspend its season came after The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed it will not send its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics, which is still scheduled to take place in July.

"I cannot see anyway the Olympics Games will happen in 2020," Mr Gilbert said.

"It's clear the sporting world is wobbling on its axis."
