Tourist attractions in Paris that are normally brimming with visitors were deserted on March 16 as French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the country would go into lockdown from midday the following day. Video posted online shows the Louvre with only a handful of people walking around outside. Bars, restaurants and non-essential shops closed from midnight on March 14 in the French capital with creches, schools, and universities following suit on Monday morning. Macron said “We are at war, a public health war, certainly, but we are at war, against an invisible and elusive enemy” as he announced that citizens must stay at home for 15 days from March 17. At the time of writing at least 6,633 people were infected with COVID-19 in France, with at least 148 deaths. Credit: Alban Barthélemy via Storyful
