Mount Washington is shutting down for the foreseeable future, joining other ski resorts across the province and the country who have stopped ski lifts.
The resort said the closure is effective as of Monday, and will be reassessed daily as the national response to the spread of COVID-19 continues.
“This is an extraordinary set of circumstances and while we regret this sudden action we are committed to being part of the solution to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis,” the resort said in a statement on their website.
Just a day ago, the resort announced it would stay open, as others closed down.
Whistler Blackcomb closed Sunday for a week as parent company Vail Resorts announced the closure of all their North American resorts from March 15 to 22. Lodging will remain open for current guests or those with existing reservations.
Cypress Mountain Resort in West Vancouver, Vernon’s Silver Star Mountain Resort and Whitewater Ski Resort near Nelson are among those now closed.
In staying open, they referred to a message from B.C.’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Friday, when she suggested people spend time outdoors.
“This virus does not transmit when people are outdoors, so go outside and play with your family, go up to our ski hills, go up to Whistler. Go out and experience what we have in British Columbia,” Henry said.
