Increased medical screenings at 13 US international airports led to long delays on Saturday night, March 14, with hundreds of travelers waiting hours to clear customs, local reports said. Passengers arriving from overseas were required to have their temperatures taken and answer questions about their travel, according to the “enhanced entry screening” procedures announced by the Department of Homeland Security. Travelers at Chicago O’Hare International Airport reported waiting as long as seven hours to clear customs, according to local media. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker called the lines “unacceptable,” saying they “needed to be addressed immediately.” Airport personnel and police officers handed out water and snacks to travelers waiting in line, the airport said.
