Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said there were no immediate plans to declare a state of emergency amid the coronavirus pandemic on Saturday, March 14. Abe made the comments after he asked that all elementary, middle, and high schools close and announced steps to ease the economic impact of the coronavirus, COVID-19. As of Sunday morning, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 780 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Japan, and 22 deaths. Shinzo said in a press conference on Sunday that the 2020 Olympic Games, held in Tokyo, would continue as planned, though schools should remain closed nationwide.
