New York City’s Times Square was quieter than usual on Saturday, March 14, as state and city officials increased measures to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. Officials on Sunday said New York State had 729 confirmed coronavirus cases, and three deaths. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Sunday that all non-essential state employees in New York City, Rockland, Westchester, and Long Island were asked to stay home and work from home. The governor also called on private businesses to “aggressively consider voluntary closings and allow employees to work from home.” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio had issued a state of emergency on Friday, placing occupancy and spatial limits on the city’s large venues, and canceling “all existing and future events exceeding a capacity of over 500 people until further notice.” The World Health Organization said on March 14 that 1,678 cases had been recorded across the United States, with 41 people confirmed to have died.
