Residents of Granada, as well as other Spanish cities, took to their balconies to applaud and cheer at 10 pm on Saturday, March 14, in a coordinated effort to show their appreciation for healthcare workers amid the country’s coronavirus outbreak. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the lockdown of its population of more than 46 million people on Saturday in an effort to contain and prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported more than 5,753 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 136 deaths in Spain by Sunday morning. The lockdown meant that all schools, restaurants, and nonessential stores must close in an effort to contain the coronavirus outbreak, but people were allowed to leave their homes to buy food, go to work, or seek medical care or help those in need. This footage shows residents in the city of Granada cheering on Saturday night. Local reports said residents coordinated the tribute through a chain message on WhatsApp, asking that those in Granada come to their windows, terraces, and balconies to show their appreciation.
