The growing spread of coronavirus is putting professional sporting bodies in an “unprecedented situation,” according to Sky News host Tim Gilbert.

America’s prime basketball tournament the NBA has suspended its season, while from next weekend the AFL and NRL will play their games without spectators.

The Australian Grand Prix has also been cancelled within hours before it was scheduled to go ahead.

Mr Gilbert said the closure of sporting events was a “massive slap” in the face of many sporting codes who rely on spectators to generate revenue.
