Morrison’s address ‘a calm message of reassurance’ in the midst of coronavirus panic

The Australian’s Editor-at-Large Paul Kelly says Scott Morrison’s address was an “effective performance” which “sold a message of reassurance”.

Delivering a primetime address to the nation on Thursday, the Prime Minister outlined the health of the country, the protection of jobs and the robustness of the economy as three major elements that the recently released stimulus will target.

Mr Kelly said “Morrison spoke in a calm and measured way attempting to instill confidence and not to play down the magnitude of the challenge, but to argue the government did have a strategy".

Scott Morrison has “learned a lesson” since the bushfire crisis where “he seemed a little bit desperate and a little bit over-anxious," Mr Kelly said.

“The contrast between the way he spoke to the country tonight and the way he spoke during the bushfire crisis was quite marked,” he said.
