As sporting events across Europe were being cancelled or taken behind closed doors, the highlight of the national hunt calendar, the Cheltenham Festival, got under way as normal on March 10, with huge crowds at the famous Gloucestershire course. Andrew Hawkins, of ANZ Bloodstock News, was in the grandstand for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Unfortunately for Hawkins, his tip, Abacadabras, was edged out by Shishkin. The Jockey Club, which runs the festival, said it had been in “close communication with the UK government” in the run-up to the four-day event. A number of anti-coronavirus measures have been put in place, the Jockey Club said, including extra toilet and hand-washing facilities. Credit: Andrew Hawkins/ANZ Bloodstock News via Storyful
