Heavy rainfall and flooding washed out a section of highway in Georgia’s Wilcox County on Thursday, March 5. The Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) Southwest branch shared footage on Thursday of the eroded State Route 112 in Wilcox County, which was closed between the cities Rebecca and Rochelle after a deluge flooded the area. Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect on Thursday, as up to eight inches of rain soaked some parts of Georgia, according to the National Weather Service’s rainfall reports. The GDOT reported several other road closures as rain inundated the south. The department said that while other southwest Georgia roads and bridges reopened, there was “no timeline on repairs” for the damaged State Route 112 near Rochelle. The department said on Facebook that they had dumped several piles of ground asphalt on the road to block motorists “because drivers are ignoring the barricades and trying to drive through.” Credit: Georgia DOT – Southwest via Storyful
