Alarming coronavirus predictions by Labor encourage ‘panic buying”

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the language employed by the opposition spokesperson to predict the course of the coronavirus in Australia has been “a lot more alarming” than the statements released from the Health Minister.

A Labor spokesperson has said a substantial proportion of the Australian population will contract the coronavirus.

It has been reported that of that number, 15 per cent will suffer severe illness and five per cent will require intensive care.

Mr Clennell said “when you start hearing that you start realising why people are stockpiling”.

He suggested that the panic encouraged by these predictions has not been justified by the facts which are that Australia has only 55 confirmed cases resulting in the deaths of two elderly individuals.

Mr Clennell said the government response to the coronavirus involves a “day by day assessment” which increases the possibility of further travel bans being imposed on countries such as Italy and Japan.
