Bring on the Labour leadership contest — it's a chance to rise again and build a fresh, exciting party

The Labour leadership race is on. And I'm relieved. There was a genuine concern that Jeremy Corbyn and his calamitous advisers could have insisted on staying on. Thankfully that hasn't happened, although they may still haunt the party in terms of who wins, particularly if it is Rebecca Long-Bailey, shadow business secretary and protégé of John McDonnell. Yesterday she gave Corbyn ten out of ten as a leader, which is quite remarkable given that the 2019 election result was the worst since 1935. She can come do my annual appraisal any day.
