Barring COVID 19 resurgence, students to return to classes in fall Lecce Ontario removing student streaming in secondary schools Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce says the government is fully planning to welcome students back to school in conventional class room learning, barring any new dangerous resurgence of Covid 19 cases leading up to September. In the daily Queen’s Park briefing Thursday, Lecce said, “our aim is to get students back to class in a conventional way. We’re going to be ready for each and every scenario.” Lecce, however, said safety remains the primary factor governing return to school in the fall and all plans will defer to ensuring classrooms are safe for students and teachers. The minister also announced Thursday the province is phasing out student streaming for secondary schools in the 2020 2021 school year to end systemic disadvantages for students who are placed in applied learning from Grade 9 onward versus those students who are placed in academic streaming for higher learning and professional careers. Studies have shown students who are placed in applied learning experience less academic success and post secondary work outcomes, Lecce said. Discretionary suspensions will also be eliminated between Kindergarten and Grade 3 to stop a marked imbalance which data shows black, indigenous and racialized students are penalized more frequently. Premier Doug Ford said “we will begin phasing out the practice of streaming for Grade 9 students. It’s unfair and it’s not right to ask these students at such a young age to make a decision that will determine the rest of their high school and post secondary careers.” “At this age (14) everyone needs the same foundations for learning,” the premier said. “Streaming leaves young students behind.” Lecce said the streaming change marks an “important day for many who have for generations felt ignored. Two million students depend on our ability today to break down barriers to their success, that impede their upward mobility and break down biases that exist in our society.” To further end racism in the school system, Lecce said the province will provide for harsh sanctions for teachers who are found to engage in racism behaviour in school and will provide teachers with more anti racism training. Flattening the COVID 19 curve Meanwhile, the province recorded 170 new cases and three new deaths from COVID 19 Thursday, a figure below the 200 mark for the 10th day in a row as part of a continuing downward trend. No new cases of COVID 19 have been logged in Hastings Prince Edward since May 18 with 43 lab confirmed cases reported in recent months. There are no active cases by last count in the region, according to the health unit. Figures show 367 lab confirmed cases are recovered and probable cases recovered total 178. Probable cases recorded to date are 181. Five people have died from COVID 19 to date in the catchment area of Hastings Prince Edward Public Health. Eight health care workers were infected while six health care workers were listed as probable. No person was listed as hospitalized nor are any people in intensive care unit. To date, 12,509 tests have been conducted in the region, the health unit reported. Ontario Ministry of Health recorded a total 36,348 COVID 19 cases and a reported 2.703 deaths to date. The Ontario government further recorded 31.977 cases were so far resolved but said 123 Ontarians were in hospital with 31 in intensive care units and 23 on a ventilator. In Canada, there were 106,434 positive cases across the country and 8,737 deaths to date. Globally, the pandemic has infected roughly 12.3 million people resulting in 554,565 deaths.
