David John Moore Cornwell (19 October 193112 December 2020), better known by his pen name John le Carré ( ), was a British-Irish author, <!-- Please do not remove or alter the British–Irish nationality wording without prior consensus. His acquisition of Irish citizenship received significant coverage in British, Irish, and American media, and sources in the article note that Irish heritage and citizenship were important to him personally. A "sophisticated, morally ambiguous writer", he is considered one of the greatest novelists of the postwar era.
