JOHANNESBURG - Parliament has withdrawn proposed legislation aimed at reducing data costs.
The Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams says Parliament is unlikely to finalise the Electronic Communications Amendment Bill this term.
In a statement Ndabeni-Abrahams said the decision to withdraw the Bill in order to enable further consultations.

“Preliminary engagements have commenced with some of the stakeholders and this will continue in the near future, with emphasis on the need for active collaboration, underpinned by the non-negotiable quest to create an inclusive and people-centred Fourth Industrial Revolution and digital economy,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, communications law consultant, Justine Limpitlaw said the high price of data has nothing to do with the withdrawal of proposed legislation aimed at reducing such costs.
The bill was tabled before Parliament in October 2018.
