The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Michael Shoebridge says the death of al-Qaeda terrorist group leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has “got a bit of an echo of the Osama bin Laden situation”.

“Where he was living in quite a lovely house in Pakistan near a major military base,” he told Sky News Australia.

“In this case, al-Zawahiri was living in a prosperous neighbourhood in Kabul and it’s hard to think that the Taliban didn’t know that.

“But really, it tells us that counterterrorism is not dead as a mission.

“It’s a reminder that the terrorist threat remains."
